End of the monitoring season in Greece
28 August, 2021
After several visits which started in May, the monitoring season in the Cyclades island complex of Gyaros (which hosts the most important colony of Yelkouan Shearwater in Greece) came to an end in August. The colony has been monitored by our Greek partners Elliniki Ornithologiki Etaireia (HOS/BirdLife Greece) since 2015. In their last visit the team mounted tags on fledglings and collected data on their post-fledgling dispersal, away from the safety of the colony for the first time. In addition, they also aimed to find suitable sites and place artificial nests for Yelkouans, in order to assess on a pilot level, whether the species will happily occupy these structures so that in the future they can monitor more easily the breeding success of this inaccessible and important seabird.
