Threatened breeding Maltese seabirds are at a high risk of plastic exposure
19 July, 2023
A study which has recently been published in the scientific journal Nature Communications reveals that the Mediterranean Sea, together with the Black Sea, is among the highest exposure risk areas for seabirds to plastic pollution in the world. The Maltese Islands are home to three species of seabirds that formed part of this study (including the Yelkouan Shearwater), to which BirdLife Malta contributed with large datasets from Maltese seabirds that had been tracked during successive seabird studies led by the ENGO. The authors of the study also found that another threatened seabird species, the Balearic Shearwater – the other focus species of our ongoing LIFE PanPuffinus! project – has a greater exposure risk.
