Working with Portuguese fishermen to reduce bycatch

Balearic Shearwaters love European anchovies and gather with gulls in large flocks around purse-seine fishing nets, in hopes of a meal. In our LIFE PanPuffinus! project, Portuguese partners SPEA are working with fishermen in the Aveiro-Nazaré area to test measures to prevent this bycatch. In September we released this video about this work. Earlier, SPEA were also out at sea between Nazaré and Aveiro counting dozens of Balearic Shearwaters as part of their seabird census for the project. The results showed how important this region is for Europe’s most threatened seabird.
