In November 2023, Portuguese project partners SPEA participated in the XI Ornithology Congress and II Macaronesian Ornithology Conference in the Azores, Portugal. Flávia Carvalho from SPEA presented the numbers of incidental catches obtained over two years of questionnaires in the fishing ports of Aveiro-Nazaré Special Protection Area (SPA). This results revealed the most affected seabird species, the season when bycatch occurred most frequently and the most problematic fishing gear. The Balearic Shearwater proved to be one of the most bycaught species in trammel nets and this shows the importance of the work for its conservation carried out throughout the LIFE PanPuffinus! project.
