Fishers from Malta, Greece, Spain, Portugal and France met in France for a seabird conservation conference.
The event, organised by LPO France as part of the LIFE PanPuffinus! project, focused on reducing seabird bycatch at sea.
Malta was represented by local fishers and BirdLife Malta staff Manya Russo, Rita Matos and Justine Borg.
Also attending were representatives from Aquatic Resource Malta, under the Ministry for Aquaculture, Fisheries and Animal Welfare.
Fishers shared their experiences and discussed practical ways to reduce seabird bycatch using mitigation techniques.
Workshops and presentations gave fishers the chance to speak openly, and their feedback will guide the project’s final results.
A toolkit of mitigation measures will be created to help more fishers take action in the future.
Interested fishers are invited to contact BirdLife Malta at seabirds@birdlifemalta.org to learn more and get involved.
