Safeguarding the Aegean islets for seabirds and wildlife
13 December, 2022
The field team of the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS/BirdLife Greece), together with staff from Greece’s Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA), have been based for a few weeks now in the Northern Dodecanese region with an important mission: the removal of rats from the valuable Aegean islets! Rats are invasive species on islets, predating on eggs and helpless chicks. That is why their eradication is of crucial importance to the islands’ nature and rare inhabitants. The specific island complex was evaluated and found to be of particularly high priority for the implementation of such actions and therefore, in addition to fieldwork, the team has contacted islet users and stakeholders in the area, such as local inhabitants, fishermen and livestock breeders.
