New signs have been installed at the Rdum tal-Madonna camping sites in Mellieħa to raise awareness about protecting nature.
The signs, placed with the help of the Malta Ranger Unit and Mellieħa Local Council, remind the public to keep the area clean.
Litter, noise and light pollution can harm the environment and disturb wildlife, especially the Yelkouan Shearwater that breeds nearby.
Organic waste left behind attracts rats, which pose a serious threat by feeding on seabird eggs and chicks.
This effort forms part of the international LIFE PanPuffinus! project, which works to protect seabird species on land and at sea.
BirdLife Malta is encouraging people to enjoy the countryside responsibly and to leave no trace when camping or having barbecues.
